Leslie V. Derry was born in Armstrong Colony, Waelder, Texas, to David Lee Derry and Bennie Hollingsworth Derry on March 17, 1948. He was the third child of twelve born to this union. His parents, two siblings and his son preceded him in death.
Leslie was educated in the San Antonio Independent School District. He enlisted in the military serving four years in the United States Air Force, including a tour in Vietnam. He was stationed at various bases throughout Texas and after his honorable discharge from Bergstrom Air Force Base, Austin, Texas, in January, 1972, Leslie returned to San Antonio and sought employment with the San Antonio Fire Department. Leslie fulfilled the requirements for Firefighter on March 1, 1973, and prior to retiring in 2001, served our city’s eastside at Station #3 as Engineer. He was also an encouragement for other family members to pursue a career with SAFD.
Having been born into such a large family, Leslie and his siblings were taught by example to value family and often gathered with one another and extended family and friends to share in special celebrations or just have a fun time together. Growing up on the west side of San Antonio he formed many close, long term relationships with loyal and devoted friends that remain today, across the city, state and country. He was a friend to many.
As his time on this earth was drawing to an end, Leslie fought a courageous battle against cancer. His family and close friends supported him in his battle, but he realized he needed a Savior to be victorious. Leslie, by God’s grace and mercy, was surrounded by family that shared God’s gift for eternal life for all who believe and place their faith in His Son. Leslie received Jesus as his Lord and Savior and has peace with God because he said ‘yes”.
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Rev. 21:4
