Arthur Calvin Kilby was born May 29, 1930, to the late Luther Kilby and Margaret Smith in Harriman, TN. Art (as he was affectionately known) was the fourth of 13 children. Art graduated from Campbell High School in Roane County, TN in 1949. Art enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951. He served his country for twenty years, and he received an honorable discharge and retired on October 1, 1971. After retiring, he decided to make San Antonio, TX his home. Continuing his education, he received an Associates Degree from St. Phillips College in San Antonio, Texas. While attending class there, he met the woman with whom he would spend the rest of his life. On December 31, 1974, Art and Veree became one. They were happily married for 45 years. Art accepted Christ at an early age. In 1978 he was ordained as a deacon by the late Rev. Carl L.Buhl, Sr. He served faithfully at Zion Hill Baptist Church. (Waco, TX), Macedonia Baptist Church, Greater Tree Mount Temple Baptist Church, and True Vision Church all of San Antonio. He also was a very faithful and active member of the San Antonio Citywide Brotherhood Union. Art was an avid bowler, fisherman, and a very fun-loving person. He always had a joke ready. He was ever prepared to lend a helping hand where needed. After a brief illness, Art was called from labor to reward on Friday, October 11, 2019, at 12:44 am. Art was preceded in death by his siblings: Jimmy, Maxine, Ervin, Harry, Tony, Sanford, Alma and Ruby Jean. Art leaves to cherish his memory: Wife - Veree Kilby; daughters - Etta Kilby and Shawana Carter-Henderson (Edwyn); sisters- Laura Ann Winton, Carolyn Sobers (Robert), Francine Little, Pamela Kilgo; grandchildren- Demetria Kirk, Natasha Kirk, Patrice Kirk, De’Andre Hayes, MyKaylah Henderson, Grace Henderson; God-son Rev. Samuel Buhl, Sr; 14 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
