Ben Edward Phillips Sr.

Ben Edward Philips, Sr. was born on May 23, 1938 to Edward Leon Phillips (Eppy) and Edith Christian who proceeded him in death. He had several brothers and sisters including Joseph Christian, Espanola Tucker, and Carolyn Phillips all of whom also preceded him in death. His has four living siblings including Barbara Ann Young, Marilyn Daniels, Patricia McGregor and Beverly Smith. Ben was affectionately called “Ben Ed” by his family, friends and loved ones. He attended St. Peter Clever High School. He began his formidable career in 1966 at Lyda Construction. He progressed to Gooden Construction in 1980 where he assisted in the build of the Hemisfair, Lila Cockrell Center, and Convention Center. He retired from Tess & Wes Construction in circa 1976. Ben was a very sharp dresser and strong-willed man. He had a magnetic personality and was always ready and willing to lift a hand to assist anyone in need. Ben’s marriage to Sammie Joyce Coleman begot two living children, Ben Edward Phillips, Jr. and Ericka Monet Phillips. He also fathered a living daughter, Vivian Ann Showers. In addition, he leaves behind grandsons Elias Phillips, Yoseff Armine Brooks and Jerry Showers, Jr., granddaughter Anjeannette Sarah Showers, great grandsons Eli Gregory Phillips, Casen Josiah Brooks, Delacey J. Collins, Darnell L. Kelly, III, Jaiden L. Showers, and Jaden Dawson, great granddaughters Jade Dahlia Philips, Kyla T. Kelly, Matina Showers, and Peyton Jones, and a host of nieces and nephews. Through his gregarious nature, he collected a host of friends and loved ones who may not be mentioned but are dutifully remembered; all of whom the Phillips family would like to thank for their condolences, well wishes and support in the loss of their loved one, Ben Edward Phillips, Sr. who will always be affectionately remembered and will never be forgotten.

  1. My condolences to the family . I had the honor & privilege of visiting with Mr Phillips through the years as he’d make the trek across town for business. Mr Phillips would jokingly wait for me to Brew his Special cup of coffee, get his snack and have conversation. I’m grateful to have met Mr Phillips, his beautiful smile & laughter, kind words, love of God and his family. His memory & friendship I’ll cherish always. God Bless you Mr Phillips!!! May you Rest In Peace.
