Delton E. Glenewinkel August 9, 1922 August 19, 2012 His Story Here is a man, a member of The Great Generation: born and raised in rural south Texas, an avid outdoorsman, at 8 years, on a canal bridge proudly holding his .22 rifle. Who lost use of ne eye when his colt kicked him by accident yet who nevertheless was a known and careful marksman, both with a gun and a slingshot, but always in respect for life. Who kept a crippled dog for his special pet. And, dropping out of school at 16 to work two jobs kept his three siblings and mother together. At 18, who eagerly signed up to fight in World War II (as his mother had remarried), and as he proudly said: got to serve overseas. (Even thought that wasn't usually allowed if you didn't have use of both eyes.) He often wore his Purple Heart cap. Who upon return, hitchhiked home by working in exchange for the ride. And, got his Graduate Equivalency Diploma as one of the first in Texas, taken at a table in the Commissioner's office, and then graduated from the University of Texas in Austin. Who went to work in the Civil Service: He married and divorced, had two beloved daughters and on granddaughter, and was a good an irreplaceable and much loved father and grandfather. He loved his sister and brothers and family and remained close to them. He remained close to the outdoors, rural south Texas, and his hunting roots. At 64, retired from his career with commendation. An independent man who yet enjoyed the companionship of his loved ones, friends, neighborhood, communities, and greatly enjoyed visiting with his nurses and staff where he lived. He served his neighbors in Cops on Patrol and had a regular patrol schedule. He loved God and served his church and was an active member of his home ministry. And, he wrote his legislators, voted, was honored to serve on juries, and assisted his legislator and even helped run an election campaign after the age of 70. This is the story of the man: father, grandfather, brother, family member, friend, proud citizen. His legacy will live in all of us. Family Delton was preceded into heaven by his older brother, Norman Glenewinkel, and mother, Bessie Buss. His family is: (daughters) Joan Glenewinkel and Lynn Young (Stu husband), Clarice Young (granddaughter), and Martha N. Smith (ex-wife). 6. I worked with Delton at Kelly AFB in the Civilian Personnel Office in the 1950’s. I was a new employee and he was older and experienced. He helped me get a good start on my new job. He and his family were also across-the-street neighbors for a few years. It was a friendly, likable family. I thought highly of Delton. May he rest in peace.
