Gussie Lee Speed, the name sake of the speed matriarch, was born on July 27, 1938 to parents Gussie Lee and John Wesly Speed. Gussie came into this world a fighter. Born months early, it was thought by doctors that she wouldn't make it. God had other plans for this baby that was born premature, with no color, and very poor circulation, with the love of her parents and siblings, and Gods plan for her life, Gussie made it and lead a meaningful and productive life. Gussie was preceded in death by parents Gussie Lee and John Wesly Speed, and all her siblings, starting from the oldest Marva Dale Cole, George Wesley Speed, Danny Speed, Joyce ElaineThomas, and Gloria Olito Speed. Also, Gussie’s oldest daughter, Patricia Rae Tumor, and finally her oldest granddaughter Siobvann Antoinette Hardie. Born in Schulenburg, Texas. Gussie relocated to San Antonio, Texas. Finished High School and married a United States Army soldier named Jessie Ray Tumor. From this union Gussie’s first daughter Patricia Rae Tumor was born. At this time the family had relocated to Chicago, Illinois. The marriage was short lived and Gussie relocated California where she met and married a Naval Engineer Robert Getter from this union Gussie’s second child, Chis Deneen Getter was born. Gussie then returned to San Antonio and began her studies to become a licensed vocational nurse. Then working as a nurse, she met and married her final husband Jimmy Lee Holman, a Korea and Vietnam Veteran whom she was introduced to by her eldest brother George W. Speed. By this time, Gussie being accomplished OR LVN became a dedicated community servant for the East Side of San Antonio. Starting many public programs funded by the City and expanding other programs that were already in existence. Gussie was blessed with six grandchildren; Rudy Williams, Sherman Williams, Siobvan Hardie, Sabrina Roberts, Rayshawn Hardie and Adrian Hardie. Gussie L. Speed, a child of God, lived a full and blessed life. Dedicated to her daughter Chris Hardie, her granddaughter, Sabrina Roberts and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends she leaves behind.
