April 23, 1938 ~ November 27, 2019
Homer E Myers departed this life November 27, 2019. He was born in Magee, MS on April 23,
1938 to Zadie and Louella (Norwood) Myers.
In the 1940s his parents, along with Homer and his sister Barbara, relocated to Chicago, IL
where he spent his formative years. He graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology in the winter of 1960 with a Mechanical Engineering Degree and left for Seattle, to work for Boeing Aircraft Co. Barbara Jean Mabin joined him in May and they were married at Good shepherdLutheran Church on May 14, 1960 where they became members. After leaving Boeing, the family remained in Seattle while Homer worked at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA. In 1971, the Myers moved to Hawaii where Homer took a position at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard until he retired in 1992.
Of course, Homer was not working all the time. He had other interests. His faith was very
important to him. He and his wife always searched for a Church home when they settled in a
new city. While they were in Hawaii they were members of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and after
his retirement and another move, they joined Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Vancouver,
WA. He served faithfully in both churches. He cared about young people. He served as Youth
Leader and as a Sunday School teacher for children in the third grade. He enjoyed teaching and
learning from these experiences. He also served on Church Councils. The Boulevard Kiwanis
Club became a big part of his life in Vancouver. He made lasting friendships and served as the
club Secretary for 14 yrs.
Homer and Barbara moved to San Antonio, Texas in December, 2016 and was fortunate to find
The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. At the time of his death, he and his wife had
attended their services regularly.
If you did not have a knickname, Homer would provide you with one. He did that many times
and the name would seem appropriate. He had several for each of his daughters and one for his
wife. Sometimes the person he would give these names would give him one. He would accept
the compliment with a smile.
He leaves to cherish memories of him: His wife, Barbara, three daughters Linda Wells (Roy),
Carla Myers, Cheryl A. Myers; sister, Gloria Thomas (Eddie); sister-in-law, Zetta Dupart, brotherin-
law Charles (Fay) Mabin; nine grandchildren: Yvette Brooks (Larry), Dennis Holmes, Noelani
