Our beloved wife and mother passed away peacefully on June 19, 2018. Born in Denver, Colorado on May 1, 1924 to Winifred & Carl Valdez, she was raised in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico until high school, where she met her husband of 71 years, Robert (Bob) Mitchell. Married on May 29, 1947, they had four daughters, Betsy Buncis (Andy), Joanna Swift (Charles), Linda Champion (Matt) and Robin Casseb (Paul). They have eleven grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Betsy McClure, and her son-in-law Andy Buncis. Joan was a faithful member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild, Daughters of the King, Stephens Ministry, as co-sponsor of the youth group, and with St. Lukes Green Door Thrift shop for over 50 years. Additionally, she was a leader with Bible Study Fellowship, active with the Good Samaritan Center, and a docent with the San Antonio Zoo. Her celebration of life will be held at St. Lukes Episcopal Church on June 29, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. Special thanks to the wonderful caregivers at The Forum at Lincoln Heights, Embrace Hospice (Mindy) and Margaret. Donations in Joans memory can be made to St. Lukes Episcopal Church or the charity of your choice.
