August 26, 1931 ~ March 14, 2019
Rachel was the eighth child of sixteen born to Joseph and Belinda
Whitfield, on August 26, 1931, in Williamsburg County, SC.
After graduating from high school; Rachel joined the Air Force and was
stationed at Lackland AFB, in San Antonio, TX. After leaving the Air
Force, she went on to work at the Argyle Club. In 1971, she graduated
from St. Philip’s College where she received her degree to become a
Licensed Practical Nurse. Her nursing career included serving as
Director of Nurses at several of the Nursing Homes in the San Antonio
Area. She also served as the Home Care provider for Mentally
Challenged patients.
Rachel loved the Lord and served him faithfully. Before leaving South
Carolina she was a member of Central Missionary Baptist Church, in
Salters, SC where she served in the Combined Choir, the Missionaries,
and Treasurer for Central Christian Women on the Move Pastor’s Aide
Club. After moving to San Antonio she was a member of East St. Paul
UMC and Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.
Rachel is survived by her 5 children Larry Whitfield, Debra McCall, Sam
McCall, Jeffrey Garcia, and Ron Clark. She has 12 grandchildren, and
23 great grandchildren. She has 9 surviving siblings, Bishop Mary A.
(JC) Walton of W. Haven CT, Catherine Whitfield of Hamden CT,
Margaret Driffin and Daisy Pasley both of New Haven, CT, Melenese
(David) Washington of Bonneau,SC, Lorine W. Capers and Helen (Leroy
Johnson both of Salters, SC, Attorney Nathaniel (Josphine) Whitfield of
Durham, NC, and Annette Redwine of Matthews, NC.
