Rev. Joe Webb Sr. passed away at the age of 86. Rev. Joe Webb Sr. was born August 18, 1935 in Beeville, TX to Anna Rae Carruthers. He graduated from Lott Canada High School, Beeville, TX. He married Frances Toliver in 1953 and they permanently moved to San Antonio in 1955. Rev. Joe Webb was employed in several places but most notably The St. Anthony Hotel, the YMCA and HEB. He would go on to become the first African American manager of a HEB grocery store in San Antonio, TX. In 1977 Rev. Joe Webb Sr. campaigned and was elected the first single district City Councilman for District 2. Rev. Webb would successfully hold the District 2 seat until 1991. During his time as Councilman, Rev. Webb opened WebbWay groceries, the first and only African American owned full grocery store on the city’s Eastside. In 1992, the City of San Antonio renamed Durango Bridge the Joe Webb Bridge. In 1995 Ruth Jones McClendon read into the City Council minutes a proclamation honoring Joe Webb Sr. for his service to the community. 2016 saw then Councilman Alan Warrick II award Joe Webb Sr. the Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2017 the Bexar County Historical Society interviewed and entered his biography into their official database. Joe Webb Sr. was a lifetime member of the NAACP as well as Grand Master, Most Wishful St Joseph Grand Lodge. In 1999 Frances Webb his wife of 46 years passed away and Joe Webb Sr. became a widow. He later married his current wife, Barbara McAllister. The couple remained an active part of the community. In addition to community work, Webb attended seminary school and became an ordained minister. He served as associate pastor of God’s Property Christian Community Church. He is survived by his wife Barbara McAllister Webb, children: Joe Jr., Linda Ray, Vincent Dee and Monique. He is also survived by his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. Rev. Webb was preceded in death by his wife Frances Webb and son Daniel Webb.

My father, William Aufderhaar, first knew him in the post office, where he gained instant respect for Joe and they remained friends as long as they knew each other. I had met him a few times and last saw him at an event in 2007 where we reminisced about his and my father’s friendship. Joe was a kind, gentle man, and he touched many hearts throughout all his walks of life. I pray God will give the family comfort, and may Joe’s memory be a blessing to all.
