Susan Gayle Nebel

Susan Gayle Nebel, age 69, passed away peacefully at her home in Del Rio, TX , on Tuesday, July 18, 2017. She was surrounded by loved family, as she had been her entire life. A beautiful, caring, loving, witty and adored wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and cousin, Susan will be missed more than we are able to express. Friend to many, a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew her, and a brave warrior against cancer, she never lost her ability to make us smile. Susan was born on March 6, 1946 in Clearwater, FL to Dr. Elmer W. Burnette, Jr. and Rebecca Benton Burnette. An Air Force "brat", she was educated in Florida and Texas schools ,graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, and attending Southwest Texas State University for one year. Upon arriving in Germany, where she went to visit her family for the summer, she met her husband Greg Nebel who was serving in the Air Force, and a great love story began. Their marriage flourished for 49 adventurous years , with Greg and Susan moving to Del Rio in 1974. Susan worked side by side with Greg to build their business, and raised two boys into manhood, enjoying their life in Del Rio, especially out on Lake Amistad boating and fishing, and hunting in the beautiful southwest Texas ranch country.Their home was always open to the friends of their sons, and many young people received loving words of wisdom and truth. Although always up for an adventure, Susan was afraid of heights. On a family trip to the beautiful Colorado mountain country, she would sit in the back seat with her head buried in her purse, counting money to avoid experiencing the fright that was caused by the mountain scenery. She had many many friends, and for years met with her girlfriends for a weekly card game and laugh fest. Best friend, secret keeper, word game player (seldom did she lose a game of Scrabble), dog lover, and the only genuine "party in a box" that we ever knew. Susan is survived by her husband, Greg Nebel, son Scott Nebel and wife Ashlie and their three children, Allison, Kenna and Reed, all of Del Rio, and her son David Nebel and his fiancee Katherine Britton of Houston. Also surviving are her three sisters, Pat Ferguson and husband Larry of Brownwood, TX, Dianne Casson and husband Wayne of San Antonio, and Edith Bergeron and husband Tom, of Tyler, TX, and her brother in law Crist Nebel and wife Kathy, and sister in law Georgia Tucker and husband Terry of Indiana. Three cousins in Florida and many neices, nephews, and extended loved ones also remain. The family wishes to express our profound gratitude to Dr. Muralidhar Beeram and his staff, especially Kelly and Abigail, Vitas Hospice of San Antonio, and Val Verde Regional Medical Center Hospice caregivers Desi, Cate, Kayla, Mary and Maru, and Chaplain Marvin Wood and Christy. In lieu of flowers, we would be grateful for donations to Hospice of Val Verde Regional Medical Center, 801 Bedell Avenue, Del Rio, TX 78840.
