Vanessa B. Antwine

Vanessa Bernice Antwine was born on February 3, 1960 in Houston, Texas to George Erwin and Marion Boatwright. She was adopted at an early age by Fernando & Bernice Taylor of San Antonio, Texas.
She attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School and Emerson Junior High School in San Antonio, Texas. She was a 1976 graduate of Fox Tech High School and went on to attend San Antonio College and Southwest Texas State University.
On April 24, 1977 she was initiated into Delta Rho Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. The Eight Elegant Ebonies embraced sisterhood. She transferred into Alpha Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc and served on the Economic Legacy, Global Impact, Mahogany Brain Challenge boards.
Vanessa graduated from Prairie View A & M University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She obtained a Master's Degree in Education (Reading & Literacy) from Prairie View A & M University in 1984.
Vanessa married her college sweetheart Adam G. “Pete” Antwine on June 6, 1981. She created a life in San Antonio, Texas as a devoted Educator and loving Mother of three children; her daughters Alexis Tennessee and Arielle Antwine, and her son Adam Antwine II.
As an Elementary Educator, Vanessa’s career spanned 35 years; teaching in Edgewood Independent School District (ISD), San Antonio ISD, Northside ISD, and Northeast ISD in San Antonio, Texas where she retired in May of 2014.She also taught for 2 years in the Prince William County schools in Manassas, Virginia.
Vanessa leaves to cherish her loving memory, her husband of 39 years, Adam G. Antwine; her daughters Alexis Tennessee (Francois) of Dallas, TX and Arielle Antwine of Chicago, Illinois; her son Adam Antwine II of San Antonio, Texas; her sisters Sandra Polk (Alvin) of Houston, Texas, and Wynell Coleman (Charles) of Corpus Christi, Texas; her brothers Dwight Martin (Mae) and Calvin Martin of Corpus Christi, Texas; her three grandchildren, Langston Holmes, Phoenix and Phara Tennessee and other relatives and friends. Vanessa will be deeply missed but never forgotten by all who knew and loved her.

I’ve been going back and forth about what I wanted to share because there are just so many. And like so many others have said, she was deeply loved because her heart has no limits. She often talked me down the ledge, a young, single inexperienced mother of two and told me repeatedly that I was doing a great job. She kept me encouraged and reminded of who I was in Christ Jesus. She supported me near or far, kept in touch when I fell off, and I never questioned who I was to her. She lovingly told me every time we spoke that she loved me and I felt that, with the depth of my soul. She was there through the raising of my kids as she “raised” so so many other kids as well. She was the epitome of a superwoman. We will forever love you “Auntie Nessa” (my kids call her that) and we will miss your sweet voice and laughter. I love you Antwine family ❤️❤️❤️

Family, Gerald, Lindsey & I extend our sincerest condolences during this difficult time of beareavment. I met Soror Vanessa some ten yrs ago when she was teaching @ Oak Grove Elementary (NEISD). My daughter Lindsey (1st grade at the time) couldn’t wait to tell “she thinks there may be a teacher at her school that’s an AKA”. Immediately through our “illustrious Sisterhood connection” I started “volunteering” in her classroom. I often joked that “being her Sisterly assistant” in the classroom was my very first job in San Antonio. As a result our family moved from the NE side of town short time later to the NW area where we’d be a couple miles apart. She insisted I be closer so she could help me with Lindsey. Through the years our families were blessed to share many special occasions/memories from the birth of her 1st grand, to signing up to Substitute at Earl Warren HS, Sorority functions and the most recent celebration of her 60th birthday. Thank you “Antwine” for your ❤ and selfless acts of kindness to me and my family since relocating from the Midwest.

Vanessa has always known me since I was a little baby, but the memories I’ll carry with me forever are during my college years. Vanessa gave me a home away from home while attending Texas state. She took me to a play and always cooked me home meals before returning to school. She was also sweet enough to help my mom plan my graduation dinner before COVID-19 cancelled it. I will always cherish her and our funny conversations. She was a true AKA diva with a big heart ! She never hesitated to pick up her phone and check up on me. Ms. Vanessa was my other mother growing up. She was so welcoming and loving in every way possible. From rides to the movie theater and mall to her hilarious sayings and caring personality, she always brought a smile to my face and lit up the room with love. There were too many sleepovers to count and during the summer she’d let me stay for days on end! She was always there for me in a time of need and I’ll ever forget that and appreciate her for it so much. She’ll continue to bless me with her legacy.

Goodbye dear teacher-friend. Vanessa and I were reading buddy partners. Every month My fifth grade and her 2nd grade class would read a book together, then Vanessa would have the whole class dance to Beyonce……….(She led the whole class). She was so much fun!!!! Mrs. Antwine was my kindergarten teacher when she taught at Oak Grove Elementary. She taught me how to be fearless and showed me love. Our families have always been connected to each other one way or another which was why we were so close. Mrs. Antwine loved each one of her students, even after they weren’t in her class anymore. Ever since elementary I’ve received letters in the mail from her wishing me good luck to the new school years. She was the definition of unconditional love. Remembering Vanessa, I met Vanessa in 1981 through my husband, Jezell Lyles, Jr. Jezell had met Pete & Vanessa in college at Prairie View A&M University in 1978. We became close friends! Over the years, we raised our children, went on vacations, and celebrated special occasions together. My husband and I enjoyed our trips to San Antonio to visit them. Vanessa was very loving and beautiful inside and out. She was very wise and always gave us great advice. She showed us how much she loved us by always calling and checking up on us. We soon discovered we shared a number of things in common, we were recently retired, loved shopping, our grandchildren and trying navigate our new world. Ms. Vanessa welcomed me into the family when I became best friends with Alexis in the first grade. She made childhood so much fun, and always had a loving hug waiting. She also welcomed my sister Sonia when she asked, “Mrs. Antwine, will you be my friend?” She became a second mother & friend as Lexi & I grew up, through grade school, college, & into adulthood. She exemplified being a mother, friend, and truly kind person. Brian & I will always be grateful for her being there for us when our daughter Katie was in the NICU. Ms. Vanessa would bring us food and crossword puzzles, and always wrote cards & sent texts. After we lost her, she continued being so loving, writing cards, sending gifts, and checking on us. I worked with Vanessa at Oak Grove for many years. I had the pleasure to work in her room for one of those years. I truly enjoyed being in that room with her and learning from her. Even after she retired, we would talk frequently, mostly about our kids and grandkids, she was so proud of them all. We ended every conversation with I love you. Vanessa Antwine, I love you and my life won´t be the same without you. She was one of a kind and my heart aches for her family, I will miss her.

It was the spring of 1972, Vanessa was running down Mittman street wearing blue jean bell bottoms, and a white blouse with silver stars. As she ran her long hair flowed with the breeze , Vanessa smiled and laughed “I’m Vanessa, what’s your name?” In the fall of 2001, I became her Soror and had the opportunity to work with Vanessa on many community endeavors. She still possessed the lovely champagne personality and flare for style that would turn heads, but then I learned how intelligent and devoted she was. She loved Alpha Tau Omega in perpetuity, and I thank God for her sisterly kindness, love, respect and loyalty. I will continue to pray for her family. Vanessa will be missed and never forgotten. Herb and I send our warmest condolences and deepest sympathy to Cousin Pete and family. Our hearts were so saddened and broken at the news of Vanessa’s passing. We already miss Vanessa’s sweet spirit. We will miss her warm hugs and beautiful smile at family gatherings. Over the years, I looked forward to hanging-out with her at family gatherings and visits at my home in Beaumont. We would share pictures and updates of our children and grand babies. We can, also, take comfort in God’s promise found at John 5: 28, 29 where He tells us that the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear His voice and come out. Oh, what a great day of Resurrection that will be! Rest in peace my friend, we’ll see you on that ‘great getting up morning’! I pray that God will bless us and keep us all until that beautiful day. Aunt Vanessa, you are wholeheartedly missed. It is hard for my brain and mouth to work together to give you the honor and respect you deserve. I will NEVER forget you. You were always so generous and loving to me and my family. I was always excited when I would learn that you and Uncle Pete were in town. I would do all I could to make sure I saw you before you headed back to San Antonio. And, when I was in San Antonio I would make it a point to come visit because you always made me feel welcomed and special and it would calm my spirit. You had this way about you that made people want to do better and be better. And, you were funny, also! I’m glad to have memories good and bad, mostly good! Just wanted to take a moment to honor the life of one of my greatest inspirations, my first grade teacher Mrs. Vanessa Antwine. Mrs. Antwine was more than just a teacher, she was a loving, generous, strong and inspiring woman! I remember being mesmerized by her beauty, her confidence and her love for her students. My family and I were blessed to have become more than friends but family. For 31yrs she kept in touch always calling, sending cards, letters, pictures and text messages. Her moments of teaching, showing kindness and love didn’t stop in the classroom. I am who I am today because she gave me a little bit of her. I feel like Lexie and I were kindred sisters from the first time we met in middle school. It was even better when my parents met Vanessa and Adam, as they became great friends too. Though they only lived in VA for a short period of time, we all remained such good friends. I’m so blessed that we got a chance to see Vanessa and Adam when they came to Virginia late last year. Family, please know that we are here for you. We will continue to pray and ask God to comfort you now and the days to come. We love you all so much.

I have finally been able to respond to my Texas family, about the untimely death of my sistah. I am at a lost for expressing how I feel, however, I have many wonderful moments/memories of you my friend and your family. Throughout the years of knowing you, we have always had wonderful conversations and reflections of life, politics, family, you name it , we talked about it. Our last conversation was about the passing of my dad, and you gave me so much comfort! Little did I know this would be our last conversation, and you would leave me a week later. I can remember our first encounter, over 20 years ago. You were my daughters first grade teacher, and we’ve been besties every since! I will miss your laughter, your morning inspirational texting, and your unconditional ❤️. I will miss you in my life, and I ask God to hold your family up, and ease the hurt that we all feel today. She was my 1st grade teacher about 1989. I just thought the other day about how she always had us clean our desks with lemon-scented shave cream (as my 6 year old self remembers). I will always remember the teacher who taught me to add and multiply. She always talked with about the movie ‘Beaches’ with one of the teacher aids…..I will give it a watch in her honor.
