John H. Ervin

john ervin
John Hugh Ervin, age 94, passed away on October 9, 2020 in San Antonio. He was born on July 2, 1926, in Pineland, Texas, and lived all his life in the state. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed aboard the USS San Saba for 1.5 years in the South Pacific. He was awarded six campaign ribbons: Asiatic, Pacific, Philippine Liberation, Victory Medal, Yangtze Service, and the Japanese Occupation. He reunited with his shipmates at reunions several times over the years and one of his fondest memories was hosting the largest reunion in San Antonio during the 1990s.   He worked in sales for most of his life, beginning with insurance in East Texas and ending with warehouse management before he retired at age 62. He was an avid camper who enjoyed sleeping in tents and sleeping bags, and he enjoyed fishing by the banks of Texas rivers. He enjoyed attending church, where he often taught in Sunday School. He was interested in biblical history and enjoyed learning about Israel. Up until his death, he listened to short stories and books on Bible commentary.   He was particularly fond of his Navy and Scout pins, a decorative cigarette box purchased during the war, a pair of brass candlesticks he fashioned from ammunition for his wife, Janie, as a wedding gift, a handmade arrow carved from wood, and his Bibles in Amplified and Scofield translations.   He was preceded in death by his oldest son, James, and is survived by his wife, Janie, his daughter, Maryam Ervin Kubasek, and his sons Richard “Rick”, Thomas “Tommy”, and John “Buddy." No services will be held at this time. The family will be having a private gathering to be scheduled at a later date.

  2. Uncle John always greeted you with a big smile and would listen intently as you spoke with him. He will be missed. Much Love, Jamie Martin

  3. I am praying for everyone back home. I’m sorry that I can not make it. I have such fond memories of spending time with Paw Paw. I love you all.

  4. This wealth of knowledge will live on in the multitude of lives he has touched. Truly a blessing to us all and I am grateful to have called him my friend and mentor. Prayers for peace and strength that I know the Father is already giving to all the lives he is a part of. John’s legacy is one of love, knowledge, and compassion, and I am grateful to have been able to carry on part of that.

  5. John was always quick with a joke—he had a great sense of humor. And I know if there’s anything mechanical in Heaven, he and my dad are working on it! May God bless him always—and his lovely Janie.
